My work as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist

My name is Fiodhna Callanan and I am a Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Supervisor based near Enniscorthy in County Wexford. I have been working as a Counsellor for over twenty years and in that time have helped many hundreds of people to work through a whole range of problems, traumas and life difficulties. The experience I have built up over the years has been invaluable and I am committed to providing the best possible service to clients that I can.

The Counselling and Psychotherapy take place in a comfortable  Shomera style room in my garden. The setting is peaceful and relaxing. It overlooks a lovely pond and there are beautiful views of the Blackstairs Mountains.

Who I work with

I work with individuals, couples and also families. I also work with teenagers from 12 years old.

My Experience and Training

I have a huge amount of experience in my work as a Counsellor. I’ve been working as a Psychotherapist/Counsellor for over twenty years. I worked in Dublin for many years before moving to County Wexford thirteen years ago.

I also work as a Supervisor of other Counsellors and Psychotherapists and have been doing Supervision for the past twelve years.

I began my Counselling training in 1989 at the Newpark Counselling Training Centre. A few years later I trained as a Psychotherapist with the Tivoli Institute of Psychotherapy in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. I qualified in 1996 with a Professional Diploma in Psychotherapy. I have completed many other courses over the years to keep myself up-to-date in my work.

After graduation, I spent eight years working as a Psychotherapist with the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC). For a number of years I was also a Team Leader in the DRCC and part of my role involved facilitation Team Supervision.

My Expertise

The work I have done so far has meant that I have developed expertise particularly in the following areas:

  • Trauma Work, with clients who have been abused, assaulted or in accidents
  • Working with people who have been diagnosed with Cancer and other serious illnesses
  • Bereavement work
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Relationship difficulties

My Approach to Counselling

I have been trained in a number of different approaches to Counselling and Psychotherapy and I use whichever approach I think will work best, giving consideration to the client’s personality type and the issues they are working on. The approaches I use include:

  • Psychodynamic
  • Person Centred
  • Somatic Experiencing
  • Sensorimotor Psychotherapy
  • Focussing
  • Mindfulness based CBT.

My Accreditation

I am a fully accredited member of the Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (IAHIP) and the Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP). I am fully committed to abiding by their Code of Ethics. I havealso been awarded the European Certificate for Psychotherapy.
